i was so surprised that robert wasnt one of those artists that grew up knowing he wanted to be an artist. As a child he wanted to be first a minister and then later a pharmacist. later when he joined the marines he realized how well he drew and then later after leaving the marines he decided to study art. his main love was for pop art, and hated abstract expressionists. because of this he tried many new ways of painting, and this later became what he was known for. he also termed a new form of his art. He called it "combines", these were meant to express both the "finding and forming of combinations in three dimensional collage."
his pieces are definitely never boring. all of them have eye-catching colors, shapes, pictures, and designs. i definitely felt like he was putting his thoughts into his artwork. almost like a map of his brain in some cases, but i dont mean literally. my perspective of it is that it shows how crazy people think and how many different ideas we can process at one time.
